Dear Affiliates, Friends, and General Aviation Supporters:

With the Spring Flying Season upon us I know how difficult it is to think of anything other than getting the airplane out of the hangar and enjoying the sights from the left seat of an aircraft. But time is running out to secure your seat at the IAOPA 28th World Assembly being hosted by AOPA US at the Westin Chicago River North, July 21-24, 2016. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago’s famous Loop and overlooking the Chicago River, the Westin Chicago River North enjoys one of the city’s most coveted locations.

In this year’s program we will be discussing subjects that are critical to every affiliate’s future as we go in-depth on rebranding, AOPA Global initiative, and topics including medical reform, integration of Unmanned Aerial Systems and much more. The Assembly is being kicked off with an up close and personal roundtable discussion with three of the most influential people in aviation worldwide. Dr. Fang Lui, ICAO Secretary General, Mr. Patrick Ky, Executive Director EASA, and the Honorable Michael Huerta, Administrator FAA will all be sharing their visions of General Aviation. This is truly one World Assembly that cannot be missed.

A separate follow-on trip to Oshkosh to attend AirVenture is being organized for those who are interested, but space for both the World Assembly and the AirVenture visit are limited and time is running out. Each affiliate should be sure to let the secretary general and IAOPA HQ know who will be representing you at the assembly. I fully expect record attendance and I urge you register now to ensure your seat at the table.

The cut-off date to guarantee your hotel room at the discounted price is rapidly approaching so don’t delay.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Chicago this July.

Sincerely,

Mark Baker

UK CAA julkisti tulevat muutokset PPL(A)-lupakirjan haltijoiden lääketieteellisiin kelpoisuusvaatimuksiin

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced today that medical requirements for some private pilots are to change in line with our top level principles for GA regulation. These changes do not apply to pilots with commercial licences or those displaying at airshows who will still need to be approved as fit to fly by a specialist aviation medical examiner.

The move will lead to both cost and time savings for pilots and, in most cases, remove the need for General Practitioner (GP) or Authorised Medical Examiner involvement in the process. The change follows a public consultation, in which 96 percent of those responding agreed with the proposal.

Once the change takes place later this year the medical requirement for UK private pilot licence and national private pilot licence holders will be to meet the same standard as that required to hold a DVLA Group 1 Ordinary Driving Licence (ODL). Existing medical options (for example a UK declaration with GP counter signature) will remain available. The same options will also be available for private balloon pilots.

To take advantage of the change, pilots will need to complete a form on the CAA website to declare that they meet the DVLA medical standard. Pilots under 70 will need to do this once while pilots over 70 must confirm their declaration every three years.

The changes are planned to come into effect in late summer 2016 when a new version of the UK Air Navigation Order legislation will be published and which will contain these changes and other significant amendments for general aviation.

More information here at UK CAA’s announcement.

Suomen ainoa lentokonevalmistaja teki miljoonakaupat

Sharpland Investments Ltd (Hong Kong) has made an agreement to purchase 25% of the shares of Atol Avion Oy Ltd (Finland). In connection to this arrangement Sharpland Group becomes the sole agent of Atol Avion in China and South East Asia. The ownership of Sharpland in Atol Avion is arranged by issuing new shares to Sharpland.

This arrangement secures the ramp up of serial production of ATOL 650 LSA amphibian airplane in Finland and at the same time enables efficient sales of ATOL products on the growing markets of China and South East Asia. ATOL 650 LSA is a significant Finnish innovation that uses a wood-composite structure having advanced technical properties while being ecological at the same time. E.g. the critical weight factor and payload of ATOL 650 LSA is the best in LSA amphibian class in the world.

Atol Avion reported this on 17th of April on their web page.
